*Guinevere has spent the evening in the bar, but as the hour grows later, she puts aside her supper. Gathering her skirt, she rises and moves for the stairs to return to her rooms.

She has never found much to do at Milliways besides think, and there has been much -- more than usual -- on her mind of late.*

Ever since receiving the note she had left for him, Merriman has been waiting for an opportune moment to approach her. The thought of simply going up and knocking on her door does not quite sit well with him -- it is certainly not something he would have done in the old days, and even after all this time old habits are hard to break.

So when he sees her heading for the foot of the stairs, he goes to meet her there. Dressed for the occasion, even, in the dark robes he favoured at court.

He inclines his head to her as she approaches. 'You wished to speak with me, madam?'

'I did.' He casts a quick glance around the bar. 'Would you prefer to speak in private?'

'You did mention that I should speak to you in your room, if I received the note and was not able to contact you otherwise.' There is a bit of a pause. 'However, it is not overly late to take a turn by the side of the lake. A different kind of privacy, though I leave the choice to your discretion.'

They leave the bar for the lake, where a faint glimmer of sunlight hover on the edge of the horizon. Twilight, but not evening just yet.

'Matters are arranged to your satisfaction, then?' he says by way of an opening as they walk at a slow pace along the shore. 'Is there aught else that you require that cannot be obtained here?'

'Bran takes the greater part of the credit for it, truly.' He is walking on the side nearest to the lake, where the ground is softer and less stable underfoot. 'I did what I could do facilitate matters, and would certainly do so again.'

He stops then, and turns to look at her.

'He wished me to tell you....' He pauses, and then continues in a quieter, more reflective tone. '"Tell her," he said, "that I am proud of our son."'

'I cannot imagine it would be otherwise,' he says gently, with a bit of a smile. 'For either of you.'

The difficult part of being a messenger is that one tends to have to deliver messages, and not all messages are welcome. But this is a message that might well be more welcome than most.

'He wishes you happiness, as well. And peace.'

'He is well,' Merriman replies. 'At peace, and content. Though you seem surprised that he should send such a message to you.'

Merriman opens his mouth to speak, but closes it abruptly. Then he shakes his head a little, a slightly rueful look on his face.

'And here I was about to make some sort of trite observation about the passage of time,' he says. 'One would think that I would know better, by this point.'

He meets her gaze quite seriously. 'But I do not think you need worry on that account. Things were...complicated, back then. I think that they are less so now.'

'I do,' he says. 'There are new complications, of course.' He waves a hand in the general direction of the bar. 'But if you will pardon the opinion, they are an improvement over the niceties of diplomacy and court protocol.'

He has always heard more than she wishes. It is one of the reasons why their relationship is as it is now.

'I shall tell him, madam. And I believe that he will be glad to hear what you would say.'

A small smile. Small, but there.

'May I escort you back to your rooms, madam? The hour grows late.'
