*Guinevere moves quietly through the halls of the castle. She is alone for this errand, and though she doesn't show it, she's nervous about approaching her husband's advisor on her own.

The door to the mage's room is before her. She takes a moment to compose herself before raising her fist to rap on the door.*

*Merlion does not glance up from his writing. The momentary pause outside the door had been enough to let him know that his visitor was new -- the pages who normally brought his lord's summons knew better than to hesitate before knocking.*

Enter.

*His voice is loud enough to be heard through the heavy wood of the door, and he returns his attention to the sentence he had been working on.*

*The room itself is not very much to look at, even by the standards of the day -- utilitarian, bordering on Spartan in its lack of adornment. But there are bound books and scrolls of parchment on most every available surface, and the fire that burns in the hearth has a strangely steady core of pure white in the heart of the red and gold flames.*

*The sentence is finished, and Merlion turns to blot the page...and as he does so, he sees who his visitor is.*

*And so in the silence he stands, turns, and bows to her -- she is the Queen, and he will not treat her with disrespect. Which is perhaps not the same as treating her with full courtesy, but then again that may not be surprising given the circumstances.*

*quietly, without emotion* My lady.

I am, and I thank you for your concern. *He straightens, and there is a beat of silence before he continues.* May I enquire after your own health?

*By this point, this is almost the longest conversation they have ever had with one another.*

*His facial expression does not change, but there is a flash of some powerful emotion in Merlion's eyes. It is not anger, but it might easily be interpreted as such, and it fades as quickly as it had appeared.*

I see. *In the same quiet voice, on the chill edge of polite.* How long, if I may ask, have you known?

I see.

*He studies her carefully for a long moment, and then takes the carved wooden chair in which he had been sitting earlier and places it before the fire, though not too near the open flame.*

*The invitation to sit is plain. He will not ask her aloud.*

*For the briefest of moments, he wonders if she can mean what he thinks she means. But she would not come to him for something like that -- one of her retinue, an old nurse-maid or a faithful serving-woman, would know better than he how to go about such matters. And even then, he knows her faith, and he does not believe her to be the sort of woman who would even consider such an option.*

My help, madam? *The tone is cautious, but marginally less chill than before.* What help would I be able to give?

*And that is something he can understand.*

Do you believe yourself to be in danger?

*Merlion runs a hand through his hair, which does nothing to tame it.*

Because you...do not believe it to be his?

*The force in her tone makes him pause.*

But you do not think he will believe you if you tell him so.

*One could hardly blame the king for being mistrustful, after all.*

*She does indeed know where his allegiances lie, and that makes her approach all the more cause for concern...and for him to find out exactly what she imagines he will be able to do for her.*

My lady, I hope you will not think me churlish if I say that fail to see how I can be of assistance to you. What would you have of me?

*And that starts the thought processes working furiously, even if he remains outwardly calm.*

I -- or rather, the power of the Light that I serve -- may be able to offer asylum. It may not be an easy matter to arrange, but it is a request that the Light would not refuse, in light of the circumstances.

*He moves to stand before her, between her and the fire -- and holds out a hand to her.*

*in a low voice, taut and slightly resonant with power* Do you request sanctuary for the child?

*At the moment the words leave her mouth, the fire in the hearth suddenly flares high, a great whoosh of flame that, oddly enough, does not give off heat.*

*When it dies down, Merlion is still looking at her, but the light of the fire seems to burn in his gaze as well.*

*softly* Very well. You have claimed sanctuary for the child, and the Light will grant that request.

*He almost does not hear her question -- his thoughts are on an entirely different level now, and so when he speaks his tone is abstracted, slightly distant.*

If you have known for a few weeks, it will be only a matter of time before it cannot be concealed any longer. Have you trusted any of your women with this knowledge yet?

*Her hand slips from his, but he is quick to move, partially blocking her path to the door.*

One moment. *For the first time, he looks somewhat uncertain as to what he should say.*

I...cannot promise you that things will be simple to arrange, or painless. But you have my word that the Light will keep you from harm, and will find a safe place for the child.

Until then, you must be strong.

*He inclines his head.* My lady.

*His expression sharpens then, as if listening to something beyond the reach of human hearing.*

You would be wise to leave now, if you would not be seen.

*As the door closes, Merlion's eyes narrow slightly. The hand that had not been holding the Queen's is tightly clenched.*

*slowly, reflectively* You may not thank me so readily again, my lady, when all is said and done.

*And then the fire is out, the hearth dark and cold, and the Old One is no longer there.*
